Accepting Being Told NO! Teaching Tolerance to Delay and Denial
Teaching Tolerance and Accepting NO: This training teaches the use of the IISCA which is the
Interviewed Informed Synthesized Contingency Analysis. The procedure includes new
technology to run functional analysis to identify functions of behavior that are synthesized such
as escape to tangible. Greg Hanley has provided extensive research on these procedures and
indicates clients may actually escape to “do something” like the iPad or toys making both escape
and tangible relevant functions in the analysis. In addition, procedures to teach communication
and tolerance will be included. Function Communication Training procedures often easily
replace problem behaviors but fading procedures have shown an increase in problem behavior
and reduction in the communication response. Teaching tolerance for being told no on a variable
and unpredictable schedule can provide methods to increase the likelihood of learning life skills
necessary for the real world. The program has also been effective for students with Oppositional
Defiant Disorder and other problem behaviors that result in a need to do things “my way”.
