Disruptive Mood Dysregulation (DMDD)

Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder, or DMDD, is a relatively new mental disorder that was only added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in 2013. Despite its recent classification, though, DMDD is actually quite common, affecting up to 3% of children and adolescents. The key symptom of DMDD is a persistent negative mood, which can manifest as irritability, sadness, or anger. This mood must be present for at least 12 months (and often much longer), and must be out of proportion to the individual's circumstances. In addition, those with DMDD will also experience at least three symptoms from a list that includes: reckless or aggressive behavior; extreme verbal outbursts; difficulty concentrating; and chronic boredom. While there is no cure for DMDD, it is treatable with medication and therapy. With proper treatment, people with DMDD can lead happy and fulfilling lives.
